
The Department of Animal Science focuses on the biology, management, production, and welfare of domesticated animals—including livestock, poultry, and sometimes companion or wildlife species. Students gain both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience through labs, farms, and internships. Animal Science is a broad discipline that combines biology, agriculture, and technology.
The Department of Animal Science is one of the fourteen departments of the Faculty of Agriculture. This department from the beginning of the journey of the university. It formulates the course curriculum aimed at awarding the degree in Agricultural Science. This department is essentially a broad multidisciplinary field of agricultural science and biology that encompasses parts of the exact, natural, economic and social sciences that are used for the practice and understanding of agriculture. In line with the Agricultural Science degree, the Department of Animal Science provides students with an understanding of the technology of farming and harvesting crops with animals, breeding animals, and processing plant and animal products for human consumption.
In addition, various units and lessons of the Department of Animal Science have discussed the importance of domesticated animals in the theoretical and practical aspects of the statistics of Bangladesh's animals and their products, agriculture and food production, earning foreign exchange and poverty alleviation. The department appears to focus on research areas like farm animal production & management, ruminant nutrition, reproductive physiology, and animal biotechnology
This is designed to provide fundamental concepts of livestock and their practices related to Agriculture. It is helpful for research and innovation in areas like animal genetics, nutrition, and disease prevention, which can lead to advancements in agricultural practices. This provides a comprehensive understanding of animal science, relevant to both academic and practical application in agriculture.
The present research capacity of the department of Animal Science may be properly utilized through collaboration and cooperation of relevant organizations or institutes. Demand-driven initiatives could be taken up to address the poverty and nutritional security problems of the disadvantaged coastal community. With a strong commitment to sustainability, innovation, and community impact, the Department of Animal Science, PSTU, continues to serve as a centre of excellence in Agricultural education and research in Bangladesh.
