ABSTRACT

The present study aimed at investigating the type of relationship between psychological factors like self-efficacy, outcome expectation & locus of control and treatment compliance such as total treatment compliance & subscales of treatment compliance in respect of diet, exercise, medicine, blood glucose monitoring, foot care and blood glucose level. The sample comprised 120 (60 male and 60 female) diabetic patients attending Ibrahim General Hospital and DCEC at Dhanmondi, Deltin 7. The sample was taken purposively and cross sectional design was chosen for this study. The age range of the participants was 30 to 70 years and their average age was 56.32 years. The highest percentage (45%) of male and female participants belonged to class XI-Bachelor degree. The subjects were divided into 3 groups according to the duration of the diabetes viz., 1-5 years, 5-10 years, and 10“^ years. Diabetes Treatment Compliance Questionnaire, Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale (MHLC), Self-Efficacy Scale and Outcome Expectation Scale were used in this study. Correlational analysis, t-test, F-test were employed in the current study. Results of the study demonstrated that self-efficacy was significantly correlated with diet (r=0.44, P<0.000), exercise (r=0.52, P<0.000), blood glucose monitoring (r=0.30, P<0.001), care of foot(r=0.29, P<0.001), total treatment compliance (r=0.63, P<0.000), and blood glucose level (r= -0.257, P<0.005), but correlation with medicine (r=0.10, P=0.26) was not significant. Outcome expectation and internal locus of control were not found to be significantly correlated with total treatment compliance, subscales of treatment compliance and blood glucose level. Besides these, two more important findings of the study were (1) duration of diabetes affected total treatment compliance, and (2) significant difference wad found between blood glucose control group and non control group in respect of exercise, blood glucose monitoring and total treatment compliance. The above findings correspond to those of many other studies. So, it can be suggested that, these findings should be taken into consideration in ensuring diabetic patients’ compliance to treatment regimen.
