ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
Established in 2011, the Department of Sociology was among the inaugural six departments of the university. Its academic programs commenced on January 24, 2012. The department offers BSS Honors in sociology and MSS in sociology. The department is committed to providing a comprehensive and critical understanding of social structures, human behavior, and contemporary societal issues. Its curriculum is designed to equip students with a strong foundation in classical and modern sociological theories, as well as rigorous training in qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. A key focus is on applying sociological knowledge to the specific social, cultural, and developmental contexts of Bangladesh, with particular attention to the unique characteristics of the Barishal division and the greater delta region. Faculty members are engaged in diverse research areas, and students are encouraged to critically examine topics such as globalization, gender, development, social stratification, environment, and public policy.
VISION
The core mission of this
department is fivefold. First, it aims to acquaint students and researchers
with fundamental concepts in sociology and social research. Second, it seeks to
empower them to apply these conceptual frameworks to the critical analysis of
real-world problems. Third, the programs are dedicated to cultivating the
skills necessary to utilize scientific methods for addressing pressing social
issues. Furthermore, it endeavors to enable participants to effectively
communicate and contribute novel knowledge to the broader scientific community.
Ultimately, the overarching goal is to produce highly skilled graduates who can
actively contribute to the nation's socio-economic development through their
professional work in respective fields.
MISSION
The Department of
Sociology aims to foster a scholarly environment where students and faculty can
critically engage with modern sociological knowledge, research, and practice.
Our curriculum is designed to promote deep engagement with pressing social
issues, contextualized within the global context and the unique socio-economic
landscape of Bangladesh. Ultimately, the Department is committed to ensuring
students acquire the theoretical and practical expertise required for
successful competition in national and global career fields.
